Office of the Dean – Waiting Area and Hallways

Seating for visitors on the Dean’s floor was unfortunately situated and poorly designed, especially since many of the visitors were waiting for meetings that could have critical impacts on their careers. We could not do anything about the location — directly opposite the elevators — but we could improve the design so that it did not contribute to anyone’s stress. The original layout afforded no privacy, since all of the seating was in a single large semi-circle facing the elevator. The upholstery was red (a color that elevates blood pressure) and most of it had no arms. We increased the seating capacity from eight to twelve, and afforded guests a bit more privacy by creating two separate areas in which most of the seating is perpendicular to the elevators. All of the new seating has arms, which makes people feel more comfortable.
