Interior design can help create a sense of community and a sense of place for universities, especially on campuses that are short of green spaces. Interior Design Solutions creates engaging and comfortable designs that help support our clients’ goals of recruitment, acclimation and retention of students and staff.  The beautiful lounges and other common areas that we design also provide attractive naming opportunities for donors.

Although this lounge is in the same dormitory as the one that was featured in Brunschwig & Fils Up Close, the design challenges were somewhat different. This room is in the front of the building, and was designed primarily for entertaining guests, whereas the other lounge is used only by the students themselves.

The Chairman of the Board was the donor, and requested a gracious, relatively formal look. Red is her favorite color, and it also is appropriate for a room used for entertaining, since it stimulates social activity and interaction. The decision process was streamlined by working directly with the donor for the room instead of with a committee. Of course, the design still needed to comply with institutional guidelines for code compliance, value engineering, durability and ease of maintenance, and was presented to university administration for review and approval.
